Why is 580EX more ex than 580EXII?

I was checking the latest price guide and it seems that the older 580EX is more expensive than the newer 580EXII. Why is this so?
Is the 580EXII less competent than its predecessor?

The price on 580EX is outdated long ago. 580EX II is definitely more expensive. A used 580EX now only fetches around $400+ at least.

580EX has already been discon. and only available 2nd hand.

Why would Canon make a Mk II if its less competent than its predecessor?
