I'm currently looking for a prosumer/advanced camera.
Been shooting around with just a stupid N95 and i feel that i need a better camera =X.
(This is also due to the fact that my N95 just went up in flames =.=)

I'm currently debating between a Powershot S5 IS or a Powershot A640.

My budget is around 500 so meh =X.
Or are there any alternative models with similar aspects?
(Like, TONS of manual control....etc)

Can anyone point this lost soul in the correct direction?

If you want to have dSLR-like controls over your exposure, aperture etc then I'd recommend Canon Powershot series. Affordable and gives you manual controls for those nice effects and the image quality is pretty good overall bar the lowest end model, the 200 plus dollar one. Something like the Powershot A720IS or A590IS would be good for your budget.

Or if its simplicity you're looking for the Canon Ixus 75 which is going for S$399 at bargaincity with a free 2GB card and 2nd original battery seems like a worthwhile deal. Or the Ixus 80IS looks good too.

i am considering selling my Lumix FZ18 which still has 2yrs 9mths warranty.

Wow! Why u wanna sell FZ18?

Anyways, between the S5IS and A640, I'd choose the S5. More robust, longer zoom to venture into other areas of photography, hotshoe.

hahaha... decided to keep Lumix for overseas travel.
D60 for indoor and serious photography.
F31fd for infrared and casual occasion.

So shiok!

why not save more for a G9?? even better :) my 2 cents worfth

I would recommend that you go for the Panasonic Lumix series. As for the Prosumer, FZ30 would be a better choice even though this nodel has been around for quite some time already. It's definitely vallue for money.

can consider the just launched super ccd hi-end prosumer by fuji.

You can't go wrong with a D40 kit. You'll vomit blood trying to use the manual functions on prosumers. You'd be better off using the auto functions.
