What makes a good bird/other animal shot?

To the wildlife experts, what makes a good bird/other animal shot? (besides not having background/foreground clutter, etc).

not an expert, but I would say, closeups are good....get a close crop.

dragos...jus asking..your lotus...why u neber use polariser? maybe it can reduce the reflections...

Clean background!! Good tight crop, sparkles in the eyes, animal doing something interesting (e.g. ruffling feathers, picking at food, etc) plus the usual sharpness, details in the exposure, etc..

Especially the doing something interesting part... we've seen too many pictures of animals/birds already, a pix of it just sitting or standing there would be quite similar to most other pictures we've seen. I would take a safe shot first, then wait for it to do something interesting.

Most nature/wildlife photographers would recommend keeping the eyes well focused as the primary requirement, esp for closeups.
