What is the silent mode in 7D for?

I thought it will cut down on the shutter sound, but I feel is not much quieter, it is really softer?

Silent Shooting is only activated in Live View mode. Go try.

It’s to reduce mirror slap and the way the shutter opens and closes to minimise the sound. The two modes offer different ways to achieve this for different ‘kind’ of ‘soft’ sound. Yes it makes a difference in a concert but eats your battery thanks to it being in live view.
