Hi all, can share your thoughts on what is the sharpest lens? And color and contrast must be very nice too. I want to take pics of everyday life. Competitors include the canon 50mm f1.4 or the 50mm macro. The 100mm macro is sharp as well, or the sigma 50mm f1.4 lens? Please share your thoughts. Thank you.

Each lens will be sharpest at a certain aperture and distance. If you want to optimize sharpness at every single aperture, the only way is to own multiple lens. All the lens you mentioned can be considered sharp enough.

Using a 100mm to take pics of everyday life can be rather challenging for most people. So can using prime lens. I suggest sticking to something like the 17-50mm f/2.8.

oh no...

some senior members are going to come and ask you to do a search or google it...

there's no 1 sharpest lens..

even for any one brand's particular lens(for eg Canon EF 50mm f1.4), different copies can vary in sharpness

then there's a sharpness comparison for different aperture/setting

then there's a a sharpness comparison for center and corners

What about all the 50mm lens? Say, the canon 50mm f1.4 vs the 50mm macro, or the sigma 50mm or tokina...

step down and u get sharpness. all lenses arent exactly their sharpest at wide open

as for color and contrast, google on chromatic abbrations and stuff. it shld help. no 2 lenses are identical in this sense.

I guess it's hard to get an answer. You are better off borrowing from your friends and compare since nobody would probably own 3 or 4 50mm lens.

Sharpness test between f/1.8, f1.4 and f1.0
Detailed test of bokeh, color, details and sharpness based on 50mm f1.4 and f1.8 II
Aperture, sharpness test between Sigma 50 f1.4 and Canon 50 f1.4

Generally, if it's of the same make, the more expensive one will produce better image quality.

And, there's also your definition of "nice". It's up to you to interpret.

Anyway its impossible to tell which is the sharpest and best of all.

For each individual lens, every copy is subject to sample variation. That means 10 copies of canon 50mm f1.4 will not all have the same sharpness and excatly equal color / contrast (though similar enough ). Glass within the lenses are made by hand, and given that each lens has at least 6-7 pieces of glass inside, 100% precision is impossible....

Adding to that, each lens is sharper stopped down than wide open. A lens sharper than B lens at f1.4 may well be less sharp than B lens at f6.3. Its just their indivual characteristics

happy shopping !!! ;)

the sharpest lens is the one that the photographer who knows his equipment, and knows what he wants uses.

sharpness is overrated.

btw, if you are talking about amount of detail that the lens can resolve, then it will probably be medium format lens, not dslr lens, so you can dream long long about the 50mm f/1.4 being the sharpest, it is not.

usually people compare lenses across comparables, e.g. UWA versus UWA, telephoto versus telephoto. where got people compare 100mm macro against 50mm, that is a big joke. you might as well ask if an unripe orange will be more sour than a lemon.

i see you did not bother reading what i wrote.

100mm macro versus 50mm, these will give different perspectives, so i suspect you are caring too much about the wrong things. and you even get upset when people tell you that this is the case.

in any case, this is a waste of time. have a nice day.
