are cameras and equipments generally cheaper in the states than here in sg, with the taxes and exchange rates taken care off?

Yes, they are cheaper here. Also slightly cheaper than HK. Probably due to the strength of S$. Since HK$ is pegged to US$, HK's price move down accordingly.

Big TVs are very cheap here... if you can find a way to import back.
Cameras/lenses are cheaper if you buy it online, not in camera shops.

TVs here are NTSC, which won't work correctly in SG (which uses PAL). Not to mention differences in voltage - 110V vs 220V.

Agree that cameras and lenses are cheaper online. Buy from a site that doesn't charge sales tax and ship for free.

cars and petrol are cheap.

Cars - For mid-size saloons like Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, about USD20K - USD30K, OTR.

Petrol is about USD2.75 per gallon (1 US gallon ~ 3.7 litre)

While things are cheap there, your travel expenses to reach those places of your interest will cost you money. So, do not rush to those places without doing your math. Also, do not forget the exchange rates on your credit card will cost you more!

But if it is an experience, then go enjoy the trip. Factory outlets are the favorite hit by Singaporeans. But do you know that there are factories in vietnam to make cheap branded clothes for factory outlets? That is why there are so many so called factory rejected goods for Armani Exchange, Guess, and what have you. Its all BS btw. The material grade is lower and so will be the workmanship.

If you are going to fly all the way here, you really should squeeze in at least a few days of shoots at many of the national parks here. This is especially true if you're into landscapes. North America has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

Cheeseburgers are cheap there. And huge. :bsmilie:

As for Canon cameras being cheap there, only if they have mail in rebates at end of the year.

Canon is currently having "instant rebates"; I ordered a 70-200 f/4L USM for USD560, after instant rebate, and combined discounts from two other promotions.

Even without the Canon promotions, prices are indeed lower here. Example: the Canon 1000D + 18-55 kit goes for about USD460. And the Canon 50mm f/1.4 goes for about USD350.
