agreed with megaweb, meter at the mid tone areas.

unless you are shooting water as foreground against sunset, else you can't get any details in foreground.

btw, CPL won't work if you are shooting the sun, it works best is when sun is on your right, top or left, perpendicular with the lens axis.

I have my CPL with me in the shots above. After trying out, I think I can do without it. At the angle I am shooting, the CPL is not so effective in removing the reflections of the water surface. However, I find the reflections attractive on the contrary.

Do beware of flares and ghosting if you use filter while shooting into the sun.

I find a lens hood is useful to prevent glare and lens flare.

Normally I will look out for mid tone within the frame. The moment when the sun almost set at the horizon ( I think it only last for 1 min ), the sun is not bright and glaring. I will meter the sky next to the sun and compensate accordingly.

When you say compensate do you just stop down the exposure?
