Actually, some consider the SFOD-D to be even more capable than the Navy SEALs. While the SEALs main function is to be a highly specialised, quick reactive and proactive force, SFOD-D operators are trained to be blend into a hostile environment. The hierachy within a Delta unit is very blurred, because operators refer to higher ranking members by names. This lack of formality is meant to allow operators to appear to be friends, tourists, adventurers even, within a hostile environment. The scene in the film Black Hawk Down where a Delta operator (Banna) is shown to be working alone and unarmed with the people who live in Mogadishu is a very accurate illustration of what Delta operators do in real life. They work within the local population to collect information on targets and subjects of interest. Delta operators have huge allowances compared to the rest of the regular armed forces. They grow beards, wear uniforms that really don't resemble anything like regularly US military garb (assuming they aren't simply fighting in civilian or local clothes) and use unconventinal weapons (Delta actually allows it's operators to select any gun they like from anywhere in the world to be kept in the base armoury as their primary weapons, as long as they aren't hard to acquire. want a Russian pistol? Not a problem, just fill in the request form).

Easier to blend in with a bunch of commies using a russian weapon than a Nato one definitely. Also sometimes, it's the ease of getting your rounds after you expended some...

Hmm in a built up area, rifles are pretty cumbersome and would be at a serious disadvantage against trained personnel with more balanced weaponry :) A well placed shot with a 9mm is as lethal as one shot with a 5.56 or 7.62. Moreover, law enforcement officers when tackling such situations are equipped with Bullet resistant vests that can be lined with ceramic plates against different kinds of firepower. Believe it or not, some can withstand even 7.62mm rounds.. of course, at a loss of mobility. Another useful protection is ballistic shields, which weighs...

Criminals are usually not equipped with such protection, but they dun need to exercise any discretion to shoot anyone they please.

With body armour, the tactics change. You then aim for the head and neck to kill and you aim for the legs to disable.

You guys caught SWAT? There's always the danger of escalation. You start getting semi-autos, they get autos. You wear armour, they start using AP rounds...

He was talking about rifles. Pistol ranges are indoors and separate from the rifle ranges. There aren't any factory Glocks chambered for .22 anyway.

The ranges are all outdoors. The most popular handguns are the 9mm and .38 models. We tried the Glock 19, Baretta 92F and Sig P226, along with 2 other revolvers, a Taurus and a S & W.

Didn't try the rifles, I'm not much of a .22 fan and definitely not an air rifle. I doubt they use anything larger than a .22 as the larger calibers will definitely take a toll on the limited range facilities.

The skeet and trap range looked pretty interesting though it definitely requires a lot more skill tracking multiple moving targets. I think the club shotguns are double barreled, over/under Baretta models.

Eh? That sucks.. Bad weather?

Sigh.... Handling & Escort huh?

I guess a Desert Eagle AE .50 costing abt USD$7K would end up abt having to pay abt SGD$10K for everything huh?

.22? So, basically limited to Glocks and S&Ws I guess.

An escort is required to bring the weapon from its port of arrival to the premises where it is stored. Apparently Cisco just raised its charges for such services, almost doubling I believe. Ammunition has to be purchased directly from the club so there the number of different calibers and variety are limited. Something like a hollow point .50 would probably not be available so no point buying a DE .50 unless you want it for permanent display purposes in a gun vault.

The cost of ammunition has also increased, mainly due to the increase in the cost of escort services. I believe it's about 30+ cents for a 9mm ball round.

You're at the mercy of the weather. If you've been to a range during NS, the conditions and type are quite similar... except you don't have to be part of the butt party.

Some pics from the recent shoot! we were shooting at the 25m mark for the handguns.

Hmmmm... all these weapons sounds like enforcement weapons. If I'm not mistaken, the Glock is being used by the Gurhkas, 226 by the Army officers, and the 2 revolvers by the police force. Not sure about the Baretta though, but they are using the same rounds, 9 x 19, so ammo won't be much of a problem for these semi's

Woah... tat's expensive. So I guess going o'seas to shoot these weapons should be cheaper then...

Errmm... I guess it might be worthwhile if you do it while you're on holiday abroad. But to go to Thailand just for a stint of shooting, that might not be the most financially viable thing to do. Like I said before, a day membership at SGC will allow you to try your hand at shooting without breaking the bank. They have a monthly program which is heavily subsidised which allows the public to get acquainted with small arms. Best to inquire directly with the SGC.

Well... I shot the 0.22 LR in thailand before and it wasn't much fun. :bsmilie:

Rather plink other calibre weapons to try. The weapons I'd love to try out would be :

a) 0.357 Desert Eagle
b) 0.50 Harris M93
c) HK MP5SD3

Probably will just go for the monthly shoot: http://www.singaporeshooting.org/SampleShoot.pdf

Wondering if anyone's interested? Can organise a meetup and go. Its gonna be lonely, shooting alone.

yes, not too long ago, a hostage situation at a housing unit off braddell road. star were called in. door blown in to rescue hostage. though no rounds fired. the owner of the unit was a ex-intelligence top guy at mod or saf.

As for hostage scenarios, SPF has a specific procedures to deal with it. Though actual use in a real scenario in SIngapore... so far no chance to use :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

there is a pay tv programme 'SWAT" on their channel. if you can record it, let me know.

Woo hoo~~~~

This gives a whole new meaning to the words "Mass Destruction". All that power in ur hands, imagine....

I saw on Discovery Ch that there is a new future weapon, Metal Storm. Electronic fired and can fire many rounds a min.

http://www.metalstorm.com/ - I see ST kinetics logo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Storm

This is a damn scary weapon. Really devastating.

Metal Storm is old technology. But documentaries, as usual, aren't made on weapons that might not amount to much. I read about Metal Storm in print many, many years ago.

Anyway, Metal Storm has one inherent weakness, and that's logistics. There's no point having a gun that fires a million rounds a minute if it means the entire detachment runs out of ammunition after a 5 or 10 second barrage. The only real abilities I see in Metal Storm is in the field area denial, where the technology really has a clear advantage over conventional mine laying devices, and with blanketing large areas with projectiles, which it does faster and in closer patterns than conventional gun-type artillery or machineguns.

But IMO, even in the field of artillery, electromagnetic railguns will surpass Metal Storm once the problems with power requirement and recoil are overcome. Logistically issues are certainly much smaller when you use the kinetic energy of a single projectile traveling at hyper velocities to cause massive damage, instead of millions of explosive laden projectiles, propelled by explosive charges.

That is not really the point as u see, the current assult rifles can fire 700 plus round a min and no soldier will really do that. The key is ability. If required, it can discharge rapid fire rounds and i think its before the gun recoils. That means, it can put a few bullets in a spot accurately.

I think this clearly has an edge over normal guns. I think it will have less recoil, and most impt, no more jams. Fire an M16 before? If u did and it jams, its fustrating and deadly in battle situations.

well the G11 was one such weapon.. it can fire a 3 round bursts accurately but the project ended due to some political reason.
