Whether it works or not or if there's any difference, it's very hard to tell. It's reasonably cheap (around $10 for a Hoya UV 52mm thread) so won't make you broke if you bought it.

Up to individual preferences. I can't tell the difference either.
Some ppl fit in a UV filter just for protecting the main camera lens. If your cam is something like the A10~A40 series which the lens will self retract, then it might not be necessary to get one.

Actually, the UV filter cuts down the distant haze in landscape pictures taken on sunny days because it absorbs the UV radiation which causes the haze.
