Does monopod helps in macro photography with a Tamron 90mm lens?
How many stops in shutter speed using a monopod compared to handheld?

I would prefer to use monopod if it does help for the ease of carrying a tripod around and setting up.

Yes and it is easier to compose with a monopod as you can move the camera and lens toward and away from your subject easier than a tripod setup.

It depends on the skill of the operator; on average up to two stops at least; more if you practice. With a monopod, your body becomes the other 'legs' of a tripod.
