Taking photos on Japanese trains

Is it prohibited?

I read somewhere that it is, but I would like to confirm this from someone who's been there.

That would sure be a damper on a trip to Tokyo.

Japan is a camera-friendly country. If u stop someone and asked for his/her photo to be taken....most likely, they will gladly oblige.

Just make sure you don't appear like a voyeur and you should be alright. And oh, taking pictures in women-only carriages is likely to get you some hostilities too.

they should be more afraid of camera phones than SLR systems.

During my trip there 7 years ago, I did not encounter any opposition taking pictures of bullet trains or shinkansen.

After re-reading your heading, I think common courtesy should be observed eg. like asking permission first before taking. This applies to all people and all places.

Been to Japan a few times. The trains are camera friendly. As are most of the people. Key is to smile and be friendly. Once even had a street punk show off his modified cadillac. I saw it parked outside a fast food restaurent and started snapping. He saw it, stepped outside the restaurent, got in the car, turn on the engine and showed me all the funky modified suspensions. The car can hop on its wheels. Hahaha!

The only time I was stopped was while I was taking pictures in Tokyo Hands. Apparently, its becoz they won't want you to take pictures of its products and prices. The staff was very friendly when asking me to stop taking. Even apologise to me. Didn't ask me to erase or anything. That's what I call service.

Do enjoy your stay there. Its a nice country to visit.
