I'm looking at a few lenses for wide angle scenery / journalistic. Wonder if you guys can give some suggestions.

The ones I'm looking at are: -
12-24mm f/4G IF-ED, http://nikon.com.sg/productitem.php?pid=73-61861521b7
14mm f/2.8ED, http://nikon.com.sg/productitem.php?pid=98-265c3544ef
24-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED http://nikon.com.sg/productitem.php?pid=82-8945b55bdb

Just wondering which one is sharp and value for money. Especially if I were to pay hell of a lot for one.

Should anyone happen to possess one of these lenses please post some photos tolong.

Cheers!:embrass:

Might also want to consider the cheaper, but very good Tokina 12-24 f/4. Half the price of the Nikkor with comparable performance. Personally I like the Tokina because of the good distortion control. Only worry seems to be CA, but unless you pixel peep, it's not obvious til you shoot outdoors. I don't shoot outdoors much so it's not a worry for me, and it's the WA that I will be getting.

Firstly, what system do you own now? Digital or film medium? Do you own any lenses including kit lens?
Anyway, most journalistic shooters use this 3 zoom lenses.
For digital body: 10-22/12-24, 17-55 & 70-200
For film body: 17-35, 24-70/28-70 & 70-200
All lenses with widest aperture from f/2.8 to f/4.
And at least a good performance detachable flash.
Hope that helps. All are not cheap bro.

Thanks Bro,

I'm using a D200 with the D70 kit lens, a 80-200mm f/2.8ED, 50mm f/1.8, SB800, D70, 2x convertor and extension tubes for macro. The silly thing is the kit lens isn't sharp enough. Tried the 28-200mm and was not too impressed with the sharpness still.

A friend of my introduced the idea of getting a 12-24 but Alan Photo did not have any in stock for trying.

Thanks Spectrum,

Yup. Might try that out though I take outdoors most often after relinquishing my studio shoots. Again thanks a million.

Nick;)

the 12-24 / 14mm give very different perspectives compared to the 28-70...
I wouldnt really compare them like that?

it looks like u would need BOTH the 12-24 AND 28-70 !

but more realistically, why not the tokina 12-24 and sigma 24-70?
that'll save u a ton of $$...that is if u dun mind 3rd party lenses...

either 12-24/10-20 + 28-70 or 17-55 alone.

What's your budget? If you're a nikon die-hard fan, you have to fork out a bomb :p

The kit lens, I'm assuming the AF-S 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5mm, is sharp -- or maybe I have a good copy, although it has other negative attributes compared to the better lens. But I'm only using the D70S.

Your case is most probably the D200 sensor outresolving the above mentioned kit lens.

I think 17-55 might be a better choice. That is if your original thread refers to having a budget for one lense only.

Thanks for all the advise. Sorry for the booboo too calebk.

Yup was thinking of getting one lens. Wife will definitely make a lot of noise if I get 2 lenses.

I have tried a few third party lenses but the hunting is pretty bad especially the higher focal range. That's why I'm looking at Nikon only.

Thanks to all again. Will be going to funan to try out the suggested ones at AP tonight.

Cheers! Got photoshoot (anything goes) do PM me.

Try some other places too. Might get better price. You'll never know. Good luck.:)

John 3:16 will allow you to try almost any lens, really, as long as they have it in stock. Haha.

Who do you look for when asking for pricing at John 3:16? Prices seem to be different depending on who you ask.

Really? I've not had that problem. Check with Samuel or Leslie. ;)
