I am not a Pentax user but just like any glass multi-coating formula, SMC is to help reduce flare thus improve local contrast and color renditioning.

I find the colour rendition of the older lenses like the M series tend to be cooler. So that may mean that the SMC coating may have evolved, just my opinion.

Pentax use SMC coating on the viewfinder eyepiece and the convex screen inside also if I'm not wrong.
