Hi all,

Could anyone give me a good recommendation on a wide angle lens for the a7 series? i could not afford the 16-35 FE. Currently i have the 35fe, 55fe, and nikon 85mm. i dont mind getting manual lens for the wide angle.

Is the samyang lens good? or is there any other recommendations for it? your input is much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

the samyang 14mm 2.8 is good for the price. only issue i have is that it is difficult to find a good and portable filter system for it. It is a keeper for me, even though i have plans to get the FE 16-35

For wide angle lenses, SLR lenses are generally more suitable than RF lenses. Samyang 14 is pretty good. Zeiss 15/18/21 ZE/ZF are also good lenses. I will not recommend adapting canon or nikon AF lenses as the MF experience of these AF lenses are horrible.

Also depend on what you are shooting with the wide angle. IF you are shooting mainly landscape, you just need infinity focus, which doesn't matter you have AF or MF.

I am also shortlisted Samyang 14mm f2.8 but the size and weight make me drop it from my list.

Currently, i am looking for Voigtlander 15mm F4.5 UWA vII. :)

Ever considered the Sony 28mm F2? Heard the review is not bad for price - performance ration.

Before i bought the FE 16-35mm, I was using Nikon 20mm f2.8 AFD lens on A7r.

Any recommendation for good compact lens for landscape?

If you're fine with 20mm, try considering the voigtlander color skopar slii 20/3.5, this is a pancake lens made for dslr, however, given that it is a in a pancake form factor, coupled with an adapter, it is still compact.

what about Sony Voigtlander 12mm F5.6? how is this compare to the 20mm?

the 12mm is much wider compared to the 20mm lens. with the 12mm lens, you can even do a selphie with 10 other ppl inside the frame. single shot no need to do pano or stitching haha

CV15v3 is the best small one that I've tried.

The least vignette and color cast issues and good sharpness up to the last 1/10 of the edge.

Its not a Sony, just a RF M-mount lenses adapted.

You will need to know how to handle the vignette and color cast imo.

Plenty of info on how to do this on the web so do a search for it.

Its the smallest widest lens out there for FF.

The FOV and perspective distortion is very different from a 20mm.

In fact, I'd say that it needs to be complimented with either a 20mm, 24mm or 28mm as a wide angle option when used more seriously.

I gave a bit more user impressions for the CV12 on my APAD thread.

An impression of a 20mm (the Pentax M20/4 in my case ) here :

The Samyang 14mm is also a good option if price is an issue.

great demonstration of the 12mm from the APAD and nice pics from the holiday! I haven't tried the lens profile for CV12mm in LR, maybe worth taking a look. been correcting in raw using ACR so far for the vignette.

i personally pair it with the FE 28mm F2 and a 50/55mm lens for a 3 lens setup.

Yes.
CV is the commonly used designation for Cosina Voigtlander.

The local distributor is Chiff Cameras in Peninsular Shopping Center.
There are other sources as well like buying online.

Yes, either cv12 or cv15 and the fe28 plus fe55 is a real nice setup.

Alright, Thanks guys!

I'm thinking the same set up for a lightweight setup!

Just wondering if the 15mm is good enough to replace the fe1635 for landscape works.

If you shoot at f8 and above for the 15mm (v1 or v2), yes it is good even on the a7r2. The BSI sensor helps. At F4 the 16-35 will beat the 15mm handily in the corners.

The new V3 which is much bigger and more expensive should put up a good fight with the 16-35
