CNY event in heritage enclave
PENANGITES can now look forward to a Chinese New Year celebration full of colours and sounds at the heritage precinct of George Town next year.
Themed Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration 2009, the event is jointly organised by the state government, Penang Chinese Clan Council and the Clan Associations Youth Committee.
State executive councillor Wong Hon Wai said the celebration would take place at Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, Acheh Street, Cannon Street, Chulia Street, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Soo Hong Lane and Kampung Kolam from 12pm to 12amon Feb 1.
The objective of this special event is to introduce traditional Chinese culture in a grand manner and celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, he told a press conference yesterday.
The celebration will feature some interesting activities such as a treasure hunt and a Chinese New Year cooking demonstration.
The highlights of the programme include Seven Towns (Hokkien, Canton, Hainan, Teochew, Hakka, Wushu and Malaysian cultures), a culture exhibition and a lion dance performance.
There will also be a cultural dance and an opera show by Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi, Lim Kongsi, Yap Kongsi and the Penang Youth Centre.
