USB = 11 Mbit
USB 2 = 400 M bit
Ethernet = 10 or 100 M bit
ADSL = 256k , 512k , 1500k ... slower than above

so no different in speed. But for stability, Ethernet is much better.
I've tried connecting my SingNet 1.5Mbps in both Ethernet and USB modems (I've got both), and found that download speed for USB is faster as compared with Ethernet! Not sure why, but this is my finding! :dunno:

what are the model of the USB and Ethernet modem ? How do test your download speed ?

Unless he download alot of mp3 and porn then cable is much faster.....but.....
dun get caught by the police man! ;p
If the cable alot of ppl share the same bandwidth with him, he also LPPL and ding-dong-bell ma! Paying extra $$$ for ppl to share his bandwidth...haha :bsmilie:
i dont necessary have to dl porn or mp3. i'm a DI artist so i have to deal with large images coming to and fro from the net
anyways,
ADSL downstream is capped at +-50kb/s or +-150kb/s
i'm living on the 25th floor of a very very busy estate (clementi) and my cable downstream is 366kb/s all day long.

same price, less problems (no DC issues).

Which blk do u live in? I also in Clementi. You are lucky my fren.

It's not the right way for general consumers to compare their ISP if they're dedicated or not. In both cases with Singnet & Starhub, both are dedicated n not dedicated at the same time to certain degrees before it enters the internation region.

Starhub is dedicated from ur house pt to the cable hub (in the area where you're staying) and then from there onwards is non-dedicated as it enters the common hub.

For Singnet, it's dedicated (using dedicated phone no line) to the Singtel Exchange Centre, and from then onwards it's non-dedicated as the Singtel Exchange Centre (shared within an area) is the common hub. So both works out to be dedicated (in certain sense) and non-dedicated.

It's like travelling from wherever you are located now to the causeway to cross out of SG. It's non-dedicated cos the roads are all shared with other road users no matter which path you take to the crossway. If you're looking at being dedicated, then u gotta OWN ur own stretch of road from your location all the way to the causeway where NO ONE else is able to travel on YOUR road except YOU urself. In this manner, it's totally dedicated until it branches out into the international region (World wide web).

Sorry to paint the big picture in such a manner, hope u all can understand.

My USB modem is Prolink 8000. My Ethernet modem is Efficient SpeedStream 5100. Here's how I test:

1. Connect both USB and Ethernet to your PC
2. Establish your USB connection to the Internet
3. Go to a download site (preferrably with few or no users) and trying downloading a file
4. Take note of it's download speed
5. Disconnect at once when finished
6. Establish Internet connection with Ethernet modem
7. Go to the same download site and start downloading the same file
8. Take note of its speed

I've found that by using my USB modem, I can managed about 150 bps, while using the Ethernet, I can only track about 120 bps. Downloading at different times of the day and different websites yields similar results.

You may want to try with ur PC heavily utilised with other progs with both USB & Ethernet results and another set with USB ports utilised as well.

What's the reason/s for doing so?

USB requires the CPU power (additional system overhead and results in slower, less-efficient data flow control) When you have other programs and USB devices running, the speed will get affect.

that is why USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) is still slower than Firewire 1.0 (400Mbps)

Ethernet... no sure :bsmilie:

funny how a simple question in the end tailspin into a fight between firewire / usb2 and ethernet.

anyway, ruggles..go get a ethernet version.
if your pc got no ethernet port / card, contact me. i've a few spares to give away.

thanks alankuik. i have a dlink 538 but cannot find driver? i need to know if using ethernet does it mean that it will auto log on to the net by itself?
collected the ethernet modem but test it on my sister in law pc seem to be like this?

Mmm.. some clarification on some points:

Broadband - There are many types of broadbands, singapore currently only have ADSL and Cable, other countries have other forms of DSLs...

Cable - Easy to set up, no user name or password required. sharing bandwidth within the immediate block if you staying in HDB and within the same estate if you're staying in private estates...

ADSL - Singtel uses PPPoE, so need user name and password. Need a digital tel line. Seeming dedicated only as far as it reach the exchange for the area.
Non-dedicated IP add. The other ADSL available if is the Singtel Magix, dedicated IP add, naturally more ex. Better upload and download speed compared to the usual Singtel or Pacific ADSL.

Personnally, I prefer Ethernet too. It's more stable compared to USB. USB devices tends to have disconnection problems for some PCs or certain models of the modem. Since having 512K plan does not mean u can get to download at 512K as there is a cap set by both cable and ADSL ISP here, as mentioned by some CSer above.

Getting ethernet also have the advantages of configuring to a router for muliple PCs to share the same connection. Where as USB modem can't be connected to the router as no router supports USB at the moment in singapore. Maybe in the near future?? ;p

Hmm.... anyway, just for info, SingNet just introduce their new plan -- 3500k.

Don't know what are they trying to do.... a bit expensive though.

Meant for the people who got too much money to spend and want the best loh!! hahaa.... ;p

Frankly speaking, since even we try to download any big files, they don't let us download at the speed the plan claims to be... What's the point?

Besides, ADSL and Cable also have different peak hours... so will be even slower at those timing..

anyone who tries maxonlinne 3000, can tell uthat u can get decent 300+ kbps if ur downstream server is fast enuff.

I'm on SNBB 1500 in office.
frankly, it's fast. but not as fast as SCV 3000 that's for sure.

btw, just to correct wad someone else had mentioned.. SG has more than just ADSL and Cable. basically we have DSL and Cable.

There are users of SDSL in SG too. mainly business / commerical users.

Cool! Din noe they brought in SDSL already. How is the performance and configuration?

SDSL simply means uplink / downlink is the same lor

e.g. 256k upload and 256k download.

512k upload and 512k download.

give me a business lead... and i'll treat you lunch! hahha. :)

U'r in this line? Or u running this business? If u like to discuss business, can always meet up for coffee. ;p

I'm in similiar line, yet not that similiar.. haha... :sticktong

Aiyah. Ethernet is definitely better. But get a good ethernet card.

Avoid those with Realtek/VIA/SMSC chipsets... when you find one with a lucent or a 3com chipset (best with Cisco silkscreened on the chipset... bestest are the rare ones with heatsinks :bsmilie:) on an ethernet card, SCREAM and BUY BUY BUY!!!

Why? The cheaper one tend to utilise more CPU processing power... I tested some of those cards and that's a conclusion that I came up with. Got money... buy the most expensive one.

Since someone mentioned SDSL services... I'm running a SOHO now and i'm screaming along the electronic highway on a 1.5Mbps SDSL.

But not cheap lor. :sweatsm:

good for u vincent!

but looking at today's cpu processing power, it might not make so much sense to splurge on a network card that processes more by itself than relying on the cpu.

:)

anyway, i'm curious. ruggles, so have u decided usb/ethernet? :)

wow..so many experts here..jst wat i looking for..i have a problem..i am using singnet the jetpack system..problem is i was given a usb modem but stated that the usb port must be intel usb port..then problem is i wanna use the modem with my fujitsu laptop, and maybe my laptop is not tt new, the usb is universal usb, not intel usb..so the modem cant work on this latop..i have checked with fujitsu, cant change usb port coz it is fixed into the laptop..so now option is to use ethernet modem..

can anyone recommend me a ethernet modem that can use for the singnet broadband and wont cost me more than $50? where is good place to buy? anyone selling 2nd hand?

tks..
