Places to Shoot Rising Sun or Moon above water body

Hi there

Know of any places that you can view a big red disc (Sun) or white disc (Moon) rising up slowly above the water horizon?
Can't share and give location?

Was at Gold Coast Beach last Jun. Standing at the beach since 5.30am, could not see a red disc.
On the other hand, saw a picture of a large moon rose above a lake in Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France. A very magnificent view.
Will nearby, in Terengganu or Langkawi have such views?


Being retrenched, will have plenty of time to do research and something to look forward to after finding a job.

Get some sunrise / moonrise app for your mobile phone, select your location and read.
Please take note of the astronomical details: full moons tend to rise around sunset time and set in the morning - always opposite the sun. So check the locations with a map whether you have any location next to the lake / sea shore with the correct orientation for your timing.

you also need long tele lens to compress the scene, so the sun or moon will appear much larger in photos, needless to say, which mean you need to shoot from very far if you want to include more subjects into your scene.

thanks for the pointing out the apps. They only inform the time and the exact spot of sunrise and moonrise. But they don't tell the size, do they?

For the well travelled clubsnappers, is the above picture being PS?

If not, based on my limited geography knowledge, only countries in the northern hemisphere are blessed with "large" rising moon and sun sights due to the tilting forward the earth off the NS axis.

This is the photo of Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, I was refering to.
Mont Saint-Michel is located in a middle of the lake.

Hi yes that is photoshopped you can see the lighting on Mt. St-Michel is an afternoon/morning shoot and the night sky is too dark and moon is too big even with lens compression jajaja

very fake.

if you use a very long lens, you probably only see the outline of the hill and building, no details at all as it is backlit.

and there is no way to balance the two exposures like this in camera, only photoshop can.

Hi this is because the angle of sunlight shows evening but it is too dark so it looks like a normal shot then someone lowered exposure to make it look like night.

The moon is not photoshopped because this is Dean Potter he is famous

But the actual scene was brighter they reduced exposure but that might just count as normal retouching

Yes because this picture is shot at telephoto there is nothing special there

I have only see full sun coming or going down over the horizon only two or three in my life, and it is out in South China sea. Only have my basic kit with me due to the sea water spray, and on a bumpy boat, it's quite a challenge, with most ended up in the bin.

I was disappointed that I could not see it in Gold Coast. 3 consecutive mornings. From Dark to Dawn.

Since you mentioned SOuth China Sea, do you think can see in Terengganu?

I did not include Desaru, because went there 3 different times also could not see.
