Put the autofocus activation on the AF back button, and set the camera to AF-C. When no need to track you can keep your thumb off the button and avoid the camera getting lost needlessly. Also remember to set the camera to release priority.

Not sure what camera u are using but i'm basing this on k-5

Looking at the lighting, it looks really good!

I shoot ice hockey matches for fun..

For me, I stop down to f/4, get around 1/200 shutter speed, then just manual focus.. More reliable.. LoL!

Thanks guys for the advise.

I did try the AFC & AF enabled button. I started with release-priority but too many OOF shots, When to focus-priority, it become slightly better. Could be my technique problem, need to find opportunity to try it again.

I am too slow to use manual lens...most probably the action will pass me by before I can even get close to focus,..

20-30 sec long exposure to give me enough time to rush into position and light paint myself, while taking care not to light my face or painting hand.

Somewhere in the 20-30secs, rush in and use torchlight to shine on yourself, "self-paint".

I know another way is to use rear-curtain sync. Or just quickly walk into the frame and trigger off flash and then walk out. LoL!
