Thought I'd pass along this email I just received from the Singapore History Museum at Riverwalk Place along Singapore River.

"..... I would like to inform you that the 12-minute short film commissioned by the History Museum, The Old Man and the River, a Royston Tan film, has been selected for the Tampere Film Festival 2004 (3rd-7th March 2004), Finland.

This festival, which began in 1969, is one of the important international festivals for short films. For more information about the Tampere Film Festival, please see www.tamperefilmfestival.fi

Last year in October this film was also selected for screening at the 14th Stockholm International Film Festival 2003, Sweden.

Since its premier at the Museum in late August, The Old Man and the River has been receiving positive reviews from film buffs as well as the general public here. The History Museum is very proud to have been associated with one of Singapore's most talented young directors. In a very small way our film played a part in this growing industry.

We look forward to new projects that will help us engage with the society at large - regular museum visitors and the non-visitors alike.

We are also proud to have been invited as one of the venues of the coming 17th Singapore International Film Festival, which will be held from 15 April till 1 May. We will keep you informed of this festival.

In the mean time, please come see Royston's film again, or more local short films at the February screening of Singapore Short Cuts, Saturday 21 Feb 2004, 4.00 - 5.30pm. This is a joint project we organise with the Singapore Film Commission and The Substation. Please call 6332 4075 or email chua_li_koon@nhb.gov.sg for details on the availability of tickets."

The Old Man and the River

The Old Man and the River
The historical heritage of Singapore seen through the eyes of 78-year-old Chia, as he ventures on a boat journey along the Singapore River, during which he recalls his first encounter with the city in the 1940s. The river still flows but the surrounding
landscape has drastically changed.

Royston Tan, talented local film-maker takes on a different approach as he breaches the generation gaps, presenting the growth of Singapore through the river in a simple yet powerful style. With the accompaniment of an old folk tune, Tan's film is both illuminating and poetic.

With English and Mandarin subtitles
Screened hourly at the Singapore History Museum,
Riverside Point
