You are freaking me out..
Luckily I hav no need to send mine yet..

Just use it with care wiil do, dont ever knock your lens or drop it. When you zoom in or out, try to be gentle.

The 3rd repair is my fault cos I drop it, sure gone case. So Dont ever drop this lens!

First 2 repaire althought I dont have any idea what happen, but i do suspect either i might have knock it without notice or I use to zoom in & out too fast.

Nikon have design the best zoom lens, but this lens has no room for mishandling.

Although my 17-55mm f2.8 is of a different league. But I would like to share that I have repaired twice for this lens as I have dropped it due to accident.

Same here, before I change to FX, the 17-55 is my main lens for DX. Also send for repair 2 time, 1 time cos I drop it, another time no idea what happen.

Does this get worse over time? Or will it just be like this throughout? Ive heard of Photog's that have had some mild symptoms exhibit in the first few days to weeks of usage finally escalating to the point whereby the zoom would just lock up or get extremely stiff. And yeah, the helicoil does indeed make the lens a little stiff or tight around the extreme corners but im just worried bout that mild grinding im experiencing :(

Thanks for all the input guys! Very much appreciated once again! ~SB

used my lense for 1yr, the zoom smoothness stayed ok thru out, no change. the slight nudge feel at 50mm been there since day 1 till b4 i dropped it by accident. all i can say is that this lens thou is not air tight, its pretty dust tight, as long as u never over dry it in your cabinet till the grease is no longer lubing the helicoil. if that happen then u be needing to get it service and re-greased. else this lens is pretty much problem free if taken care properly, no dust to enter and get stuck to the grease on the helicoil and cause problem over time.

nearly took apart this lens totally, studied the design and my conclusion is that the lens joints are very tight fitting where every parts are high precision parts to fit together perfectly, this tight fit protect against dust from entering the lens, water wise i dont think so. guess those that started having stiff zoom or focus ring which escalated to a jam either had knock the lense without noticing or they vice like grip and squeeze the zoom ring till they deform LOL. thou it may sound impossible abt the grip part but i dont think its impossible as the level of precision of the ring is really fine and if u got really strong grip, PLS dont go and squeeze the barrel.
