Was with a friend who bought a D40 recently. He was trying to take some photos and the kit lens started to squeak as the len auto-focus. We were all worried and try to test the camera. It's giving out a squeaky sound when ever it need to AF.

Worst, when around 45-55, instead of focusing the AF make it more blur. I tested the camera and some shot took 3 depression of the button to get to focus and of course squeaky sound at each press.

What should he do? He is leaving for a holiday trip tomorrow night.

Will he harm the len if he continues to use it for his trip? We were able to get some proper shots with the camera even when it squeak, just that at times it does not AF at all or the AF makes it more blur.

If he goes down to the service center, is it possible for a one to one exchange?

it is the AF motor issue send bak nsc as mentioned by our kind csers

Sounds like same problem as me. Read my thread. I think motor died already. :dunno:

defective product - just get replacemnt la.. what else do you want - don't think anyone here wants to open up lens and diy.

NSC repaired my lens within 0.5 hour last time FOC. (I broke the motor by wacking the lens, darn obvious). just bring your warranty card.

I was in same situation as you, having to leave for holdiday in 23h. NSC rushed the repair for me. Explain to them your situation, and be nice.

Just curious, how did you managed to break the motor?

Use my D2x bash up robber (I'm close quarters specialist). D2x survived without a scratch. Lens got pulled out, front part that rotates got pulled out.

How was the lens kept when not in use? Dry cabinet? Dry box with silica gel? AF-S lenses cannot be kept in a too dry environment because the lube will dry up and cause the mechanism to jam. Keep the humidity between 45-50%. If the lens is still working, just keep half pressing to get the lens to keep turning until the mechanism is loosened up.

obviously not lah. I rarely see D2x being used in SG anyway.

when you switch back to MF, do give the front rotating tube (the part with the front element) a little little twist, you might hear a little soft "click" and thats is the sound of some gear being engaged.

sometimes when you MF, and you set to AF without doing this for that particular d40 lens, there might be poor engagement, and result in the phenotype as you have observed.

similarly for those who use AF lenses with slot key motor drive, sometimes when mounting people think that the lense is 90 degrees mounted cannot turn anymore means properly mounted already. one should give the lens body a little twist left and right lightly, to ensure proper engagement of the slot key, there after half pressing for the "key" to properly go into the slot with a soft "click sound". there are instances where poor mounting occurs, people dont realize it and find that their lenses dont AF
