The 35mm is refering to the width of film roll including perforation, not the image frame size.
This format was descended from movie film introduced at the turn of 20th century, then adapted for usage in still-photography by Oskar Barnack (Leica) with 2:3 aspect ratio horizontal frame (the movie format use vertical frame 4:3 aspect ratio). Resulting an image frame of 24x36 mm.

Thanks for the explaination, how about "135"? ;)
"135" is a code devised by Kodak to identify its 35mm film inside cartridge. So it is actually Kodak's product code.
