Newbie qn on FEC

What is FEC? I understand it is flash exposure compensation but not sure how I can make use of it. I own a 300D with a 550ex and would like to know how I can make full use of the equipment. Glad to get help from all of you. Thanks in advance.

Place your subject at the center of the frame.

1) Use your 300D and 550ex. shoot it.

2) now adjust FEC on your 550ex to -2, shoot again.

3) now adjust FEC on your 550ex to +2, shoot again.
