I went for the practice race yesterday with my Canon 350D, and 70-300mm lens. I bought the walkabout tickets so I was just walking about taking pics.

I tried to take pics of the cars racing by. But I don't know why firstly, the shots aren't clear. They all looked like in a blur because they were all going so fast that I cld hardly take a clear shot! I did use the manual focus, so at least the cam didn't focus on the safety net.

Any tips/pointers on how to take pics of the cars as they race by?

Thanks.

Minimum shutter speed : 1/500(bump up ISO if necessary)
Try to shoot at corner area, the cars will slow down.

most pictures from F1 cars are panning shots. have you tried that?
use a shutter of around 1/125, or even faster.

if you wan static shots, i'm GUESSING the shutter to be around 1/800.
