ND filter for shooting with big aperture

Hi,

I would like to seek some opinions from fellow photographers here who have use ND filter in order to take advantage of the large aperture lenses example 50mm F1.4/135 F2 etc.

The ND filter will be helpful under very bright condition where by using a big aperture like F2 is nearly impossible without compromising the exposure. There are some school of thought that a 3 stop ND filter is a good choice.

My question is if this 3 stop too extreme? or something between 1-2 stop is ok? Appreciate your contribution.

You can just slap on a circular polarizer if you don't have a ND. Works most of the time.

3 stops is just fine, any lower, it ain't gonna make much of a diff.

if you shooting someone under direct sunlight (sunny f16), using aperture of f1.4, the shutter speed can reach 1/13200 sec, 1 stop or 2 stops ND is almost useless.
