i a newbie abt monopod.. can i be taken for nite shots.... let say a shutter speed of 6 secs.. and can it stand on its own??

1) Can but might have camera shake.
2) No it cannot stand on it's own. Those version that can need addition legs and will topple easily...
 

Monopod not recommended for nightshots. Use a tripod for that.

SOME of the Manfrotto monopods have a foldable self-standing legs that let the monopod stand on its own.

No. Monopod reduces vertical shake, and can add 1-3 stops to your exposure. But there's still the problem of horizontal shake. If your shutter speed is longer than, say, 1/15, it is highly unlikely that the monopod will help. 6 seconds is certainly too much. Just buy a small lightweight tripod for $30. If you don't raise its center column, a light tripod is surprisingly stable as long as its not windy.
