Can we directly mount our camera or lens with tripod ring directly to a monopod? Is it essential to have a head on monopod?

I've seen some pros mounting their tele primes directly to monopod.

Most PRO level tele primes have a rotating collar for that purpose. Our cameras do not. Thats why most users attach to a flip head.

My tripod collar for 70-200 2.8 consider rotating collar? I think I can loosen it and change the camera orientation without taking off from monopod.
