Metering

I'm using a canon 400D.
Just some questions about metering:
I know there are 3 metering modes avail: evaluative, partial and center-weighted average meterings. May be someone can enlighten on when to use which? I know the 400D guide has a info about it, but i found it insufficient.

Another qns:
To confirm, there's no spot metering in 400D right? Which mode in 400D would be the closest to spot metering?

Closest to spot metering will be Partial metering IIRC.
