Silvestre seals Gunners move

Mikael Silvestre has completed a transfer to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee, bringing down the curtain on a nine-year Manchester United career.
The French defender, who joined from Internazionale in September 1999, made 361 appearances for the Reds, scoring 10 goals and winning 10 major honours.
Speaking after Silvestre had completed the formalities of his move, Sir Alex Ferguson told ManUtd.com: “Mikael was a great servant and a wonderful professional. We wish him all the best at his new club and thank him for his service.”
Silvestre performed in the centre or left side of defence for the Reds, but was hit by serious back-to-back injuries in his United career, suffering a dislocated shoulder and cruciate knee ligament damage in 2007.
With Patrice Evra established as United’s first-choice left back, and the central partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand seemingly set in stone, Mikael was unlikely to find regular first team football at Old Trafford this season.
Arsenal have swooped to add Silvestre’s international experience to their backline, and the popular Frenchman joins compatriots William Gallas, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna, Abou Diaby, Armand Traore and Samir Nasri at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikael has penned a two-year deal and will wear the number 18 shirt for the Gunners.

United edged a close-fought contest with Chelsea thanks to a clean sheet by Ben Foster and Danny Drinkwater's fourth pre-season goal in as many games.

The rival clubs could have been facing each other in Malaysia had the Champions Youth Cup there not been cancelled - instead, they met at the Marston's Arena, Northwich.

With skipper Gary Neville at right-back, United started the first half well, yet found clear chances at a premium. Rafael da Silva - operating on the right - came close with a pot-shot from outside the area, but found Chelsea goalkeeper Searle equal to his effort.

At the other end, Foster was called upon to make a couple of smart saves on his return from injury - most notably a late tip-over from Jacob Mellis' rasping drive.

The England international stopper can reflect on a solid evening's work, and could even claim a partial assist in the winning goal on the hour-mark. Having claimed a loose ball, Foster picked out Kiko Macheda with a superb long ball. The Italian's shot was blocked, but Drinkwater burst onto the rebound and fired a low shot inside the post from 15 yards.

Chelsea could have had a penalty when Jimmy Derbyshire inadvertantly cleared Jeffrey Bruma's header with his hands, but the Reds held on to claim a fifth win in six friendlies. The teams meet again on 26 August in a return match at Chelsea's Cobham training ground.

Simmo settled at Rovers

Danny Simpson is acclimatising to life on loan at Blackburn Rovers, and is pushing for regular first-team action at Ewood Park.

The 21-year-old full back will spend the entire season working under Paul Ince and, although he was an unused substitute in Rovers' opening day win at Everton, Simmo is confident his chance will come.

"I feel settled now," he said. "I will just keep training hard and when I get my chance I'll prove myself.

"He (Sir Alex) said 'don't just do your training, do your extra bits you do at United, and don't be afraid to ask people at Blackburn to do the extra bits because that will improve you'."

Having embarked on a host of loan deals before, Simpson is well aware that his activities at Blackburn will be closely monitored by Sir Alex and his coaching staff.

"He also said to me 'you'd better play well because I'll be watching you,' so he'll be keeping a close eye on me," Danny revealed. "But I want to prove to myself that I can challenge at this level, so it's a big season for me."

Can. He can control midfield, freeing scholes to attack more. Man Utd struggling cos lack of scorer and more imptly, can't control midfield, means not many att passes and chances.

O'shea is just not good enough these days as a defensive cover. Seems like he lost some pace.

Portsmouth may have been dealt a tough start to the league season by playing United right after being thumped by Chelsea, but their head coach Joe Jordan insists these testing games are the reason for competing at the top level.

Former United striker Jordan said: “You’re in the Barclays Premier League to play sides like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool,

“They’re the biggest games and you’ve earned the right to play in them. That’s why big players come to Pompey. They want to play in the Premier League against United.

"It’s a hard start [to the season] but we had a hard start last year. It threw the top teams at us but you’ve got to play them at some point.”

United’s league match at Portsmouth comes after the sides met in the Community Shield at Wembley and in a pre-season friendly in Nigeria. The Reds won both - albeit via penalties in the Shield - but Jordan says those results may have little bearing on Monday’s outcome.

He said: “We can learn from the games we played against United in pre-season but football is unpredictable. That’s what makes it such a great game.”

Pompey were missing some key players in their 4-0 mauling by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but Jordan expects many of those absentees to be available for the Bank Holiday clash.

“We’ve got Sean Davis, Glen Little, Noe Paramot and Richard Hughes coming back and we’ll see how their training goes.”

Squad swelling for Pompey

Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful that his squad will be boosted by the return of a handful of key players in time for Monday evening's trip to Portsmouth.

Carlos Tevez, who missed last weekend's draw with Newcastle after a family bereavement, will play after featuring for Argentina on Wednesday, giving United a vital extra body in attack.

There is also a chance that Owen Hargreaves and Ryan Giggs could be in contention after training this week, while Anderson will return this weekend from Brazil's Olympic team.

Ji-sung Park has also taken great strides in recent days, and has played a full part in training all week, but the trip to Fratton Park will come too soon for him.

"Tevez is back," Sir Alex told his pre-match press conference. "He’s available. Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park both trained with the first team this week, I’m delighted with that. Ji won’t be considered, Hargreaves we’ll assess on Sunday to see if he can play a part.

"Anderson will be back on Sunday, so that’s an extra body. Giggs has trained the last couple of days, plus all the players have come back from internationals fit, which is a bonus, so we’re ok in that respect."

The United manager also confirmed that Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo are on schedule for their own returns from injury - three weeks and three months respectively.
