Papers: Saha Roma-bound?

Roma primed to strike loan deal
Roma are ready to take United striker Louis Saha on loan with a view to a £7m move to Serie A. The Italians want to be sure of Saha's fitness before sanctioning a permanent deal for the injury-plagued France striker whose Old Trafford career has ground to a halt following a series of injuries. Ironically they are also looking at United target Luis Fabiano who is expected to leave Sevilla this summer. Sir Alex Ferguson had the Brazilian watched last season, but Fabiano's agent Jose Fuentes has hinted that he may prefer a move to Rome where fellow countrymen Alexandre Doni, Rodrigo Taddei and Cicinho all play for last season's Serie A runners-up.

United are also being linked with Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones, according to the Mail. Jones, 26, was one of the key members of the Schalke side which reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, but was cut from Germany's final squad for Euro 2008.

Meanwhile, The Sun claim the Glazer family have insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale at any price. The Daily Express reckons Real Madrid are ready to bankroll Ronaldo should he stay away from Old Trafford when the players report back for training next month.

In other news, the Mail reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to manage at the highest level one day, maybe at Old Trafford. "I have ambitions to go into management. I want to stay in the game and I want to stay at this club," he said.Round up by Gemma Thompson

Eusebio tips Ronny for the top

Benfica legend Eusebio has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to one day take over the title of Portugal’s greatest ever player.

Eusebio, widely regarded as one of the finest footballers to ever grace the game, scored 727 goals in 715 matches for Benfica. He guided the Lisbon team to four European Cup finals between 1962 and 1968 and captained his country to the semi-finals of the 1966 World Cup, scoring nine goals in the tournament.

It’s a phenomenal record, and yet the 1965 European Footballer of the Year believes United winger Ronaldo has the potential to go even better.

“Yes, [he could take my crown],” Eusebio told FourFourTwo magazine.

“And the way he’s going at the moment he can become not only the best footballer in Portugal, but also the best in the world.”

Indeed, Eusebio is tipping Ronaldo to win the coveted FIFA World Player of the Year prize for 2008.

“He might not become the best player of all time, but I think within a short space of time Ronaldo will be recognised as the best footballer in the world. He was third last time, which shouldn’t be sniffed at. But he’s got every chance of winning the trophy very soon.”

Those chances will improve further should Ronaldo help engineer a Portugal victory over pre-tournament favourites Germany in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals. That match takes place on Thursday 19 June at Basel's St. Jakob Park (19:45 BST).

Reds earn England call-ups

United teenagers Danny Welbeck and Ben Amos have been named in a provisional England squad to travel to the U19 European Championships in July.

Striker Welbeck, 17, and goalkeeper Amos, 18, both enjoyed successful seasons with United’s Academy side, with Welbeck also turning out regularly for the Reserves.

Brian Eastick’s 23-man England squad will be whittled down to 18 for the tournament, which takes place in the Czech Republic between 14 July and 26 July.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old forward Jesse Lingard, who plied his trade in United’s U16 side last season, will travel with the England U17 side to the 2008 Nordic Tournament in Sweden.

England face Finland on 28 July, before further group games against Iceland and Norway.

Transfer Rumours: June 08

United's Premier League and Champions League Double seemingly won't stop Sir Alex Ferguson further strengthening his squad this summer - with Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart the latest player to be linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old impressed during Holland's Euro 2008 campaign and, according to the News of the World, is wanted by United, Chelsea and Liverpool for a fee of around £15million.

The UK press continue to link United with a host of European football's top strikers with Lyon's Karim Benzema, Ajax front man Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz all being discussed. Prices range from £15million up to £30m.

Papers: Real to break bank

Real will pay 'whatever it takes' for Ronaldo
Real Madrid are prepared to smash the world transfer record with an £80 million bid for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Spanish club's manager, Bernd Schuster, said they would "pay whatever it takes" to lure the Portuguese winger from Old Trafford. With the Spanish champions also offering to pay Ronaldo £182,000-a-week after tax, the potential deal is nearly double what is currently the biggest transfer in football history which occured when Zinedine Zidane joined Madrid from Juventus for £46 million in 2001. With Ronaldo having announced his "dream" of joining Madrid, the club expect the 23-year-old to force United's hand over the sale, or put in a transfer request. Madrid may offer a cash-plus-player deal involving Wesley Sneijder or Robinho.
Jeremy Wilson, The Daily Telegraph

Ronaldo's future continues to dominate the media, with former France talisman Zidane quoted in several newspapers as saying he expects to lose his tag as the most expensive player of all time if the Spanish giants get their man.

The Sun covers Wayne Rooney's continuing honeymoon fun in Las Vegas while, according to The Daily Mail, David Gill is top of Arsenal's wish-list for their vacant chief executive's position.

Scouted: David Silva

Spain's Euro 2008 quarter-final win over Italy might not linger in the memory but some of the men involved may be worth remembering.

Like David Silva, for example - a creative midfielder for Spain and the subject here of a scouting report by United supporter John Cho:

Player's name: David Silva
Position: Winger
Match Scouted: Spain v Italy
Strength: Quick feet, intelligent, sharp shooter
Availability: A product of Valencia's youth system, he might want to leave this summer for Champions League football. I'll be upset if this kid, like Torres, goes to Liverpool. I've kept saying this kid will be big. Now we have the proof.
Estimated cost: £15 - 20 million.
Key moment: The whole match against Italy. Torres and Villa were nowhere to be seen, but this kid tormented the Italian defence with his quick feet, clever passing, finding space, quick changes in direction, and some threatening long-distance shots. Although a winger, he sometimes appeared in the middle as a playmaker and also helped out in defence.
Suitability for United: Some people may say his physique is not right for English football, but after seeing him take stick from the Italian defence, he is likely to hold his own against Premier League defenders.

The views expressed in Fanzone articles such as this do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United.

Queiroz urges Ronaldo to stay

Carlos Queiroz has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford because the club can give him the "attention and affection" he deserves.

The Reds' number two is keen not to comment on media speculation that Ronaldo will join Real Madrid, but insists United is the best place for the winger to be next season.

"Manchester United is very special," Queiroz told Portuguese radio station Renascenca. "Because of that we know how to surround Cristiano completely with all the affection and all the attention he deserves.

"However, not speaking is the most sensible course of action at this moment, so that we don't contribute to a less than positive spectacle and so we don't aid those whose interests are difficult to identify."

Queiroz has also been linked with the Portugal coaching job vacated by Luis Felipe Scolari, but refused to declare his interest in the post.

"I'm not going to put myself in the market because the decision on the national coach should not be a result of those who make themselves candidates, but a decision that is conscious, rational and based on what the Federation judges [believe] is necessary for the team.

"I'm not going to tell you whether or not I'm contacted, that way I know for sure that it will be dealt with in due form and in due place."

Managers

Paul Ince’s appointment as Blackburn Rovers boss sees him join a growing list of top-flight managers who once played at Old Trafford under Sir Alex.

Last season saw Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes and Roy Keane take on their former United boss, with only Hughes avoiding defeat in both games.

This time there’s another contender, as Ince takes the reigns at Ewood Park for his first spell in top-flight management.

Which former Stretford End heroes have had a crack? And how did they fare?

PAUL INCE
Club: Blackburn Rovers
Ince joins Blackburn after cutting his teeth with Macclesfield Town and Milton Keynes Dons in League Two. Although three tiers below the Barclays Premier League, Ince proved his winning qualities as a player still serve him well now he occupies a position in the hot seat. He led the MK Dons to victory at Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy before securing the league title (and promotion to League One) on the final day of the 2007/08 season.

ROY KEANE
Club: Sunderland
Keane made more of a splash than a ripple when he turned his hand to management in 2006/07, taking Sunderland from the relegation zone to the Premier League in his first season in charge. The dramatic turnaround won him admirers around the country, as did his strict approach to discipline and willingness to speak his mind. Keane’s second season at the Stadium of Light didn’t quite reach the heights of his first, although he led Sunderland to a respectable 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.

STEVE BRUCE
Club: Wigan Athletic
An integral member of United’s first Premiership-winning side, Steve Bruce has yet to get his hands on silverware as a manager. Of course, that’s not to say he’s been a flop at either Birmingham City or Wigan Athletic. Far from it. Against the odds, Bruce kept Wigan Athletic in the Premier League last season after taking over at the JJB Stadium in November. He actually succeeded in guiding them to 14th and laid solid foundations on which to build during 2008/09.

A strong motivator, Bruce tends to get the best out of limited resources.

MARK HUGHES
Club: Manchester City
Hughes began his managerial career with the Welsh national team, despite never having taken charge at club level. It didn’t matter: “Sparky” is a natural leader, albeit quieter off the pitch than he was on it! A calming influence on the touchline, Hughes nevertheless encourages his teams to mix brains with brawn. In his eyes, there’s no reason why attractive football can’t go hand-in-hand with bone-crunching challenges. Perhaps the most successful former pupil of Sir Alex, Hughes has just taken over at Manchester City after four seasons with Blackburn Rovers.

Record v Sir Alex:

08/09 meetings:
29 November (a)

BRYAN ROBSON
One of the most influential players to ever pull on a United shirt, Bryan Robson has returned to Old Trafford to take on a new role as club ambassador. In doing so, Robbo leaves behind (for now) a management career that saw him take charge of Middlesbrough (1994 to 2001), Bradford City (2003 to 2004), West Bromwich Albion (2004 to 2006) and Sheffield United (2007 to 2008). It was rollercoaster ride for much of Robson’s life as a boss, beginning with promotion to the Premier League with Middlesbrough before the 1996/97 season saw the club relegated, despite reaching two Wembley cup finals. A spell at Bradford ended in relegation, as did his time at West Bromwich Albion. Robson’s tenure at Sheffield United last season didn’t work out either, with Robson leaving the club in February 2008.

Record v Sir Alex:
Played 11 Won 1 Lost 8 Drawn 2

GORDON STRACHAN
Fiery Scot Strachan is one of football’s great characters and was never shy of speaking his mind during his time in English management. Now top boy at Celtic, Strachan faced Ferguson in England during spells at Coventry City and Southampton. He began at Highfield Road as player-manager in November 1996 and engineered an unlikely final-day escape act to preserve the Blues’ top-flight status. Strachan kept Coventry in the Premier League until 2001 and was sacked shortly after the beginning of the 2001/02 campaign. But it was back to the Premier League for Strachan, who took over at Southampton in October and led them to 11th in the league. They finished eighth and reached the FA Cup final the following season before Strachan stepped down in March 2004.
