Lomography effect on colours

Apart from infinity-focus and slight vignetting, the other lomography effect is the "colours dancing" due to their Minitar 1 lens ... so does anyone have any technical understanding of how to achieve the colour effect on an SLR?

It appears to me to be a warming effect, the reds get redder, the greens become muted ... something along the lines of an 81B filter?

I also heard lomo cameras have some film made for them - is that true? what's the feature of the film?

Hi Hyun,

Besides tweaking with filters there are other ways to achieve the weird colors of Lomo lenses.

1. Use expired film.
2. Cross processing.

The filter method involves using combined plastic filters to give you the out-of-sync look. Cheap or old coloured filters usually do the trick.

Smear them with hair cream, oily stuff, whatever, and you get some rainbow effect with soft focus.

You can also apply nail polish to plastic filters for customized effects.

Cellophane plastic film will also do the work and they are also cheaper to obtain. Try different types of plastic wraps with colored gel.

You can also go the commercial way. Buy off the rack colour intensifier filters.

Just tape the filters over the lens.

No need to pay S$108 to $300 plus for a Holga or Lomo. A brand new P&S will not cost more than S$60. New Olympus Trip fixed-focus cameras are selling at S$35. Others like Nikon and Fuji will cost a little more but never more than S$100. Nice to know that the lenses are also multi-coated.

And if you don't intend to Lomofy or Hogafy them, just shoot as is for nice sharp and properly exposed pictures. Dual purpose.

Those of you with existing Cokin filters will only need a Cokin P&S filter adaptor for these simple cameras.
