ISTANBUL HERO HANGS UP HIS BOOTS

Istanbul hero Vladimir Smicer has retired from professional football at the age of 36 - and will now take up a post as Czech Republic manager.

The former Kop star has decided to hang up his boots after a spate of injury problems at Slavia Prague.

"I am not able to help Slavia on the field. I can no longer give it 100 percent," he said.

"My head and my heart want me to carry on but my body says no."

Smicer will now succeed Ivan Hasek as national coach in his homeland following their failure to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

The winger made 184 appearances for the Reds during a six-year spell at Anfield between 1999-2005, scoring 19 goals.

LIVERPOOL TOLD COLE WILL COST £20M

Would you spend £20m on Carlton Cole? No, nor us, but that's reputedly the fee West Ham have demanded from Liverpool for their striker.

But wait a moment before you declare the world has gone mad. The Sun claim that the Hammers have only put that ridiculous price tag on Cole in an attempt to fend off Pool's interest.

'The East Londoners are desperate to keep hold of the England striker, who only signed a lucrative four-year deal at the club 12 months ago,' it reports. 'Cole has six goals already this term and Hammers chiefs are confident of keeping hold of their leading scorer in the January transfer window.'

BENITEZ TO CONSIDER FREE OPTIONS...

So in that excessive context, The Daily Mirror's claim that Rafa Benitez is considering signing Roman Pavlyuchenko on loan does make some surprising sense.

As we all know, the Pool manager needs some extra firepower and has little - if any - money with which to fund that required reinforcement.

'The Spanish coach has sounded out advisors for Spurs forward Roman Pavlyuchenko, who indicated yesterday that he will press to leave the London club in January after failing to gain a regular first-team place,' says the Mirror. 'Benitez sees him as the ideal stand in for Torres, and given his international pedigree he could do a job for Liverpool to put him into the spotlight before the World Cup gets underway next summer.'

The paper also reckons that Benitez 'will think about approaching his former club Real Madrid to talk about taking Dutch forward Rafael van der Vaart who has confirmed he will be leaving the Bernabeu in the January transfer window. Benitez will hope to get either player on loan, with the idea of a permanent deal in the summer when he will have more transfer funds'.

One way of raising some actual cash, however, will be to sell Italian defender Andrea Dossena. The Mirror says that he is 'close to concluding a deal with Napoli to take him back home when the window opens'.

siao, waste $$ on carlton cole!

but being rafa, he will sure buy some 'un-heard' player soon..
