Voronin on target as Liverpool down Lucerne

Lucerne 1 Liverpool 2

Goals from Brazil midfielder Lucas Leiva and Ukraine forward Andriy Voronin saw Liverpool claim a 2-1 win over Swiss Super League outfit FC Lucerne in their second pre-season friendly.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez handed new goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri the gloves for his debut, while fellow newcomer Philipp Degen was also in a first XI which included Spaniard Danny Pacheco but not Steven Gerrard, who was left on the bench.

Pacheco was the architect of the 10th-minute opener, combining well with Brazil midfielder Lucas before the latter slotted home coolly to round off the move.

Benitez's men were pegged back soon after when Degen failed to win a far-post header, allowing the ball to break to Gavranovic who converted an uncontested header.

Pacheco and Yossi Benayoun both shone in the first half and the visitors soon moved back into the lead through the equally impressive Voronin.

The Ukraine forward took control of the ball 16 yards from goal before producing a sweetly-hit lob to make it 2-1.

Voronin, a constant thorn for the Lucerne defence in the second half, went close to grabbing a second but there were no further goals.

There was, though, one further plus for Benitez who gave Dutch winger Ryan Babel his first 45 minutes since sustaining an ankle injury in his country's Euro 2008 preparations.

POOL SET TO BID FOR KEANE - REPORTS

Liverpool are expected to launch a £18m bid for Robbie Keane imminently after Rafa Benitez reportedly told the Anfield hierarchy that pairing the Tottenham striker with Fernando Torres was now his number one priority this summer.

Having grown frustrated by Aston Villa's refusal to sell Gareth Barry for less than £18m, Benitez's focus has switched from midfield to attack and away from the Midlands towards north London. According to The Times, 'Benitez has identified Keane as an ideal strike partner for Fernando Torres and the Liverpool manager has instructed his board to try to conclude a deal by the start of next week.'

Tottenham remain adamant that they will not sell Keane, nor Dimi Berbatov to Manchester United, but 'but Liverpool and United believe that Tottenham, having been informed of both players' determination to move, will sell at the right price'.

Whether Liverpool will make a fifth bid for Barry even if they buy Keane is dependent on whether they can sell Xabi Alonso. The Spanish midfielder, along with Barry, has been linked with a move to Arsenal but Liverpool are said to be doubtful there is any truth to those reports and 'confident that they will find an overseas buyer for Alonso, such as Atlético Madrid, before concluding a deal for Barry'.

BARRY INJURED AND SNUBBED

Gareth Barry's increasingly uncomfortable summer to a further turn for the worse when he was snubbed by his manager and suffered a foot injury upon his belated return to pre-season training with Aston Villa.

Barred for two weeks as punishment for telling a national newspaper that he wanted to leave the club, Barry finally arrived back at Villa's training ground yesterday morning.

Barry was expected to hold talks with Martin O'Neill but the anticipated confrontation did not materialise with the Villa manager absent due to 'prior appointments'. Worse was to follow when Barry then suffered a foot injury during a 90-minute training session. The severity of the injury is unknown but the midfielder has been ruled out of Saturday's Intertoto Cup first-leg tie with Odense BK.

The injury is the final insult for Barry after a disillusioning few weeks. After beginning the summer playing for England and pursued by Liverpool, Barry now finds himself in limbo, with bridges burnt at Villa and his move to Anfield apparently on hold.

Rafa Benitez has grown increasingly exasperated by Villa's demand for £18m and has reportedly switched his focus towards signing a striker after failing to sell Xabi Alonso in order to finance Barry's transfer. A fifth bid for Barry may yet be forthcoming, but, says The Guardian, 'Even then it is doubtful if Liverpool will offer £18m, increasing the likelihood that the England international will still be at Villa when the Premier League season starts in little more than four weeks' time.'

Arsenal could offer Barry an escape route out of Villa but Arsene Wenger is understood to have doubts as to the player's worth.

STOKE END CARSON PURSUIT

Stoke have ended their interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson.

The Premier League newcomers were believed to be lining up a £4million move for the England international.

However, a statement from Stoke reads: "We can announce that we are no longer pursuing Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson.

"The club will continue to look to improve the squad and remain hopeful of closing in on several new signings ahead of the Barclays Premier League campaign."

Carson, 22, spent the whole of last season on loan at Aston Villa, who had previously expressed a desire to make the move permanent but were put off by a reported £10million price tag.

The goalkeeper - who has two senior England caps - joined Liverpool from Leeds in January 2005 but has made just nine first-team appearances for the Reds, also spending time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton.
