[ Lens ] Olympus Announces the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f1.8

SLR was selling it 617 yesterday but stock sold out before I got there

I gave up on SLR Revo already, $617 is definitely a good price and $33 cheaper than what I paid yesterday but the agony of facing my own palm for their service level, I'd rather move on! peace out...

The last i saw, P20/1.7 Harvey Norman selling at $499
PL25/1.4 the last time i checked with Cathay, it was going for $790.

True, saw the HN deal too about two weeks ago. Not sure if it's still on.

17/1.8
Cathay asking $650 - stock available
Harvey Norman asking $673 negotiable ;) limited stock.

alan also 650

Is my summary correct?

If need the faster AF, then get 17mm.
If need sharper images, then get 20mm.
If die die want FF 35mm, get 17mm
If want smaller footprint, get 20mm.
If want to play with hyperfocal distance, get 17mm.
If don't want to spend so much, get 20mm.

Anything else? LOL

Nope :)

If die die want FF 35mm, get 17mm F2.8.
If want smaller footprint, get 17mm F2.8.
If don't want to spend so much, get 17mm F2.8.

Coz the 17mm F2.8 is the cheapest of them all and if stopped down it's very sharp (and comes also in black). ;)

i think at this time, the 20/1.7 is really good value at $499
Its down side are
- banding issues with GH3, EPL5, EPM2 + EM5 at ISO6400 and above.
- slow AF

17/1.8 has fast AF, metal built, hyper focus when pulled back,
It's draw back
- not as sharp as 20/1.7 (at 100% crop) ... i think normal view no one can really see the difference.
- Almost 24% more expensive

i guess there are trade offs in every use case. I would jump at the 17/1.8 if the premium over 20/1.7 is less than 20%. ... ie. if its <$600.

Banding with the GH3 as well? :(

How much is the 17 2.8 in black? I can't seem to find a black one.

got black meh?

Hi ,

Startin to compare the Pana 20mm and the Oly 17mm F1.8 and pondering whether I should get the Oly to replace the Pana.
Main reason being that the focusing speed for the Pana is noticeably slow though it still produces sharper images.
The AF speed is impt to me for street photography.
Any one thinking of doing the same ?

AF speed will be helpful when you are doing street under low light, for example at night. But i cant say for sure that 17/1.8 is better as i don't really test it under similar conditions. However when i focus at night under low light (not a lot of street lamps) with 45/1.8, the focusing was fast enough. Perhaps an issue with using a panasonic lens on an olympus body?
