Not all lens comes with a lens hood, some are sold separately. As the bros above has mentioned, lens hood prevents flare not sure how true the sharpness part is and i do put on a hood whenever i go shooting, to prevent knocks and such.
I wouldn't say its a must, some people use hand, hat, newspaper and whatever they usually use to block out the stray sunlight, so for them, a lens hood is not a must:bsmilie:

Not all lenses come with hood. Canon users would love Canon more if hoods are supplied with non-L lenses. Agree? I think brand like Sigma will come with lens hood for all lenses.
I put on lens hood all the time, outdoor or indoor. Esp after I dropped my lens some time ago. It was the hood that save the impact on the front element.
With hood, the image is not sharper. But the contrast is relatively better.
