Anyone can help explain what the codes (eg UW0307) on the L lens mean ?

Depends on how well it was taken care You'll be surprised what u find inside some 2nd lenses ... ;p

I'm using some lenses that are more than 20 years old. No problems.

THere are L lens which were made 15yrs ago still works as new. Especially those without IS.
The USM ring type motor which were used for L lens has no gear so the wear-out is lesser.
