saw a lot of you guys/gals here talk alot about getting a 70-200mm lens instead of the 75-300mm lens.

is there any reason why the 75-300mm lens is not so popular? :dunno:

newbie here....... :embrass:

what i think is most of the 75-300/70-300mm lens are ranged between F/4-5.6. The 70-200 are F/2.8, better quality basically. I did used a Sigma 70-300 lens before, and eventually upgraded to a 70-200mm. Heavier, but gives you sharpness and good contrast.

Hope this helps.

Normally optical quality of extreme zoom like the 75-300mm are not very good.

the longer the zoom the poorer the quality - normally, prime lens (no zoom) gives the best quality. Correct me if I am wrong.

But you have to passionate about photography to build up your armory of lenses, not to mention the added weight of your bag.

200mm f2.8 is important for u can add in 2x teleconvertor, become 600mm f5.6, auto focus still function in this range.

But if 300mm f5.6, after a 1.4x become 420mm f11 or after a 2x teleconvertor become 900mm f22, auto focus not working anymore.

from this somewhere from a book, not very sure since i dont have teleconvertor  :bsmilie:

build quality also a problem, f2.8 is more sharp.....

i have a canon 75-300mm f4-5.6 cost less than $300
but a 70-200mm f2.8L cost more than 1k
a 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM need about 3k

Totally different animals. A lot of manufacturers make bright, fast focussing lenses in the 70-200 range, i.e. Canon 70-200/2.8L IS, Nikon 70-200/2.8VR, Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX HSM. These tend to be pro level, well built, and expensive.

OTOH, the 70/75-300 range is populated by cheaper, darker lenses with lower build quality. There are exceptions of course, but the longer telephoto is not everything.
