Judges' decision is final. The only surefire way of an individual being happy with the winners of a competition is to RUN the competition himself, sponsor the prizes, and appoint himself as the sole judge.

People often take competitions too seriously, and then make disparaging remarks - why so serious?

Got win , good, never win also won't die. If you think the competition no good, can don't join, join the competitions that you think select good photos, and give it a potshot. The sad part is, sometimes, all of these remarks are just to put down the competition (no matter how good or bad the selection really is) to console one's self. Of course, only individuals would know the real reason.
