How to take a potrait on a tripod?

Juz wondering how do u mount a camera in the potrait alignment (versus landscape) on a tripod?

Three ways:

1) Most tripod heads can flop on its side to make the orientation vertical. This is about the worst method. Makes the balance of the tripod/camera lopsided and you lose movement in some axes.

2) Lens mounted collar. Just rotate the lens. The body follows.

3) Get an L-plate that allows mounting the camera body in vertical orientation. Not cheap though. Check out www.reallyrightstuff.com

Just make sure you align the camera to one of the tripod legs, not in between 2 and it will be stable.

And of course, if you shoot square formats such as 6x6, you will no longer have to worry about horizontal/vertical compositions. Alternatively, if you have a high enough resolution digital camera (or do a high res film scan), you can always shoot landscape and crop later.

Agree that flipping the camera vertical via the tripod head is not ideal, stability aside, it's also hard to manouvre properly. The L plates are ideal, but not exactly cheap.
