How to draw an empty square?

Dear all, i am learning to create a montage using PS. I am trying to draw some "empty squares" (such as pic1) as background patterns or borders for the photos but not successful. So far i only can draw filled squares/circles (eg.Pic2). Can any kind soul instruct me on which button to click in PS, and how to control the width/thickness of the line?

Create a new layer first.

Hold Shift before you draw.
Then from menu, Edit->Stroke

You're on your own there.

the help menu is greatly underused

you can hit F1 to find most of the answers you want.....


if you can't find the F1 key, here you go.....

for making borders for photos
go to layer palette,
selected the layer contain photo
click on layer style
select stroke
you can use any color, any thickness to make the borders...
