I confused. How many type of EF-S 18-55mm in the market

According to Canon web, it shown
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM

But from the buy-sell forum, there is another EF-S 18-55mm Kit

so, there are 3 types?
what is the kits lens (EF-S 18-55mm) ? IS or USM or none of them?

There are only 2 models of EF-S 18-55mm

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM

Which you had already mentioned.

I guess thats not all.

EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 MKII
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM MKII
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS

The USM version is for Japan only IIRC

MKII is what?
how come got USM and USM MKII?

so, if ppl say.. 400D kit lens , they are referring to which one?

IIRC = If I recall correctly

MKII = Mark II, the newer version

400D kit lens is EF-S 18-55mm MKII, without IS, without USM.

I think dolby is very mistaken... There is more then two.

Oh yeah, just to add: the IS version is the optically better version =)

Been using the 18-55 IS version. Not bad for such a cheap lens. Pretty sharp, nice colour and good flare control.
Value for money.

If you are uninformed, best to keep your inaccurate information to yourself.

Shawnlim is right. There are quite a few variants of the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. The notable ones are the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II (has been the kit lens for awhile, included with 350D, 400D, 20D and 30D kits) and the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (the current kit lens, and I daresay the best performing one to date).

Here's a sample of the optical performance of the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. No sharpening. Just B&W conversion and levels.

EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 MKII
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM MKII
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS

Yes this is the complete list - 5 versions.
3 officially made it to Singapore - all except the USM so here goes (with the cameras for which they were kit lenses)

EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (300D, 20D, I think 350D too)
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 MKII (400D, 30D)
EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (40D, 450D)

I had the first one - not too good esp wide open. OK at F8-11.
I now have the IS model - much much better but not quite the quality of my17-40L but close to the 10-22 in sharpness.
