In EPL or even European Cup, it will show the player distance run against the club average distance run, calculated right up to 2 decimal. Wonder how is it traced. Do they have something that hook onto their body for every player and using satelite to check or what?

I'm guessing GPS supplemented with miniaturised accelerometer or perhaps real-time triangulation of the soccer player's exact spatial position through the use of multiple active or passive Radio Frequency (RF) transceivers located around the stadium.

These two could also augment each other.

i was figuring triangulating with 3 cameras at known co-ordinates can very easily get you the vector path/distance moved by a player, especially with today's advances in image processing, i think player identification is no issue

actually don't need so high tech lah...

all that is needed are cameras with proper scaling of the pitch when recorded. then do a trace of the player movement and compute from there.

with all the supergrade camera technology, it is not very difficult to identify players recorded in the video feed.

Whatever stats that is stated on the net, give and take some percentage of error. the decimal places are probably due to averaging.

Cut the crap. Joke has its place but not your kind of stupid reply in poking fun. Most insensible reply ever why shouldn't this question be asked?

So you recognise its kopitiam but you don't recognised there will be all sort of questions being ask that someone may be technically curious to know. Though its coffee shop talk, if you don't have the answer, just skip it. Don't need to add your 2 unworthy cents.

commoner5, take a chill pill... maybe Fotodavid is upset with Torres for not performing well after jmping over to EPL new club chelsea... ;p

btw, those GPS chip could been embedded into the jersey. likely a one way directional GPS transimtter. capture unique tag of the player, lat, long position.

Bro,

I don't usually flare up and get upset, but I can't stand people by replying "why you need to know" as though you are almighty, know all and such question is unwarranted, same time putting down another forum member.

And when rationality struck, then looking for escape clause, gee, chill up man.

Ok, rant over.

BTW, I think Torres is over. The more he played, the more anxiety he will gets. Just look at the 2nd leg when Man U playing Chelsea, he hardly contribute anything. A big mistake to buy him.

So that means each player has to wear some kind of transmittal, right?
There are GPS receivers and radio transmitter including antenna and battery with a weight of less than one gram available commercially, these can be integrated into the jersey collar.
