HELP: Reinstalling WinXP

Hi, my notebook has become quite slow and the network configuration has become crazy thus I am thinking of reinstalling my Windows XP.

Before that, let me explain my problems:
1. My current WinXP is 1st Edition but I upgraded to SP2
2. Computer becomes slow...expecially when starting a program
3. I can't login in SSL (or is it SSC? Secure network like online banking), can't login to Yahoo Messenger, Skype...etc. Previously I can but recently I change the setting in my windows firewall...and now I am stuck!
4. Can't get connected to WS_FTP. I can connect to my site using Frontpage folders

My Planned Solutions:
1. Reformat and reinstall WinXP
2. Twick Firewall again...but I don't know how. Even if I turn off the firewall I still can't login to YM or online banking site.

My Questions:
1. If I want a clean installation of WinXP, how can I format the drive C? Using win98 startup disk or boot from XP installation CD? I have C and D partition in my PC, will the D partition be affected? I have many important files in D. My previous experience is that after formatting C, WinXP is still there and I got TWO WinXP in my notebook.

2. If I installed my new WinXP, should I upgraded to the SP2 again?

3. If I don't want to reformat, can someone teach me how to twick the Firewall or internet connection setting so that I can access to SSL website?

1) You can boot up to the XP installation screen, do a delete partition, this will destory the partition and all data, after that create the partition again and install, this time it will be clean with no other OS inside.

2) Frankly, since SP2 is out, I've never upgraded mine. This will be at ur discretion

You can reinstall XP from the XP bootable cd-rom. They will ask you which partition you wish to install XP. Choose C: and they will say they detect a C:/WINDOWS and ask you if you want to replace that installation. Choose Yes.

I do not think its your firewall that is stopping you from making HTTPS connections with a secured server. You can verify that by turning off your firewall and try again? Assuming you are using IE, go to Toos > Internet Options > Advanced, scroll to the bottom and ensure that the SSL options are all checked.

Upon a fresh installation of XP, do all your upgrades (including SP2 if you want to), you have nothing to lose anyway since its a fresh install.

Just a reminder, be sure to have all the Drivers ready before you reformat your notebook. Sometimes WinXP cannot find the proper drivers for some of the devices.

Reinstallation is quite easy and straight forward. Suggest you do as espn said (1), delete all the partition, then recreate them. This will make a clean installation.

Most likely your problem is either spyware or some unknown virus.

BTW, don't know if you'd have ACTIVATION problem if you do a reinstallation. I though XP needs to activate after each installation. Can you use the same code to activate it? Make sure you can

Use Firefox... it's definately better than IE...

who knows when a new spyware will emgerge and attack on the microsoft antispyware. Then you'll need another antispyware s/w to remove the spyware that is attacking the microsoft antispyware .... :sweat:

I suggest using the recovery CD that comes together with your notebook.

Or for the more recent notebook for some brands, there is a hidden partition within the hardisk that you can access to restore your XP to the factory setting. Usually it's some special key that you press during reboot, and you'll be shown a program that allows you to restore your XP.

1) Can use keygen to generate a new installation key. Then can activate using the new key. If suay suay, the key has been used, generate a new key again.

2) There's patch available to bypass the activation process for Service Pack 1.

There's no need for activation for Service pack 2.

The slowing down of Windows systems after a period of use is a well known fact. What you can do to make sure your system is in good shape is this.

1) Use Firefox for your web browsing experience. Microsoft IE allows all sorts of bugs to enter your system. From innocolous cookies to real painful bugs.

2) Get a Registry Cleaner. Windows have a nasty habit of leaving the registry clogged up even after you uninstall programs.

3) Defrag your harddisk on a regular basis. Think of your harddisk like a library, at the start of the day, all the books are nicely sorted on the shelves making it easy for you to find. At the end of the day, the sorting is all messed up and it takes a while for you to find your book. Same goes on within a harddisk. If its not defragged, it'll just take a longer time to find a file or even pieces of it as one file can be divided and stored into different areas.

WinXP SP2 have a Firewall Service running. Go to Administrative Tools->Services, scroll down the list and find something that reads Windows Firewall or something... select it and click stop.

Had no problem with SP2 all this while with both my work and home (and gf's) PC. Wireless connection is better.

There ARE some software that are incompatible with SP2 earlier on but most of them have released patches or newer SP2 version already.

I would suggest booting with a XP installer CD, use it to repartition your HDD and format it to NTFS, and install it with SP2. And of course, disable the built in firewall and use third parties like ZoneAlarm (FREE)... works fine with me.

But then again, always stay updated with windowsupdate. Some of those security patches are really useful, unless you wanna switch to Unix/Mac...
