I, a newbie, just got here from Houston, Texas last week and my friend told me to check out this site.

I am actually looking to buy (not renting) Nikon 70-200mm VR ii and am wondering if anyone knows where and which store to find a new or used one with good price. I don't yet have the bank account yet so it may be best that I can pay with credit card.

Hello Daniel. I cannot answer your question but I am sure someone will be along shortly that can. I am the odd American on the board living in Oklahoma. Houston is quite a city is it not? I love the place because of NASA and the port. I'm not much into Texas but I do like Houston. Have you been to the NASA complex and did you see the F2 they have there?

If you are looking at new lens, you can try Cathay Photo at peninsular plaza, If you have DBS/POSB Credit card, you can get 12 months installment plan, with 0% interest.

Some of the more well known shops for buying new camera equipment are like Cathay Photo as mentioned, TK Foto at Plaza Singapura and SLR Revolution at Excelsior Shopping Centre.

2nd hand items can check out the few shops in Peninsula Shopping Centre... not sure if they accept credit cards though

You can do some research on the 'market price' on the 'Buy/Sell' Personal Classified section here in this forum before buying used equipment, however it is unlikely anyone here accept credit cards ;p

Are you going to be here long-term? If you qualify as a tourist, you could avail yourself of the Tourist Refund Scheme, which provides for a refund of the 7% GST.

Yeah, I'll second the reputable stores already mentioned here, URLs below. If you stick with these guys, you can't go wrong. They'll accept your US credit cards, no issue.

What we usually do, we email/call the stores for a price quote and also to ensure that they have it in stock. We compare those prices, then head down to the store to make our purchase.

Do avoid random stores (aka tourist traps) that dangle a good bargain upfront but end up selling you accessories and other crap at inflated prices. Even locals have fallen prey to such stores. Just walk away the moment you think anything's off.

I would generally avoid buying used shortly after arriving in a new city, unless you're experienced and know what to look out for with used gear.
