good lens

anybody got any idea of a goody zoom lens which is good range for a normal wide angle to a normal telephoto range.

i'm using a DSLR, considering the 1.5x to the lens, actually i went in to check out the new sigma 17-35mm f2.4-4 hsm, but it is mainly for wide angles right, and not forgetting the ex price for that! :cry:

any recommendation pls
