Filters - which one for which purpose?

Silly question,

just bought my dslr and was talkin to a old bird..
the fellow ratter on & on abt filters and i was like *crows fly, pigs fly*
don't really know what he was talking abt
(i din interupt him cos he was tooo engrossed into the filters stuff he was telling)

so can any kind souls pls tell me..

how does filters affect the camera / photo output
and what are the different filters available and what is it for?
