Hi, this is my first post here and I'm very, very new to DSLR. Recently, I bought a Canon EOS 400d Kit II, which includes the 17-85mm lens.

My questions are:
  1. is it really necessary to get a filter? If so, which kind(s) and brand(s)?
  • what affordable(less than $1000) lens is good for portraits?

I'd really appreciate your kind advice. Thanks.

  • what affordable(less than $1000) lens is good for portraits?

depends on wat type of portraits (full/half/indoors/outdoors) u wanna take, here are some recommendations:
1. 50F1.8
2. 50F1.4
3. 85F1.8

Thanks for the input guys. I'm trying to make full use of my 17-85mm AND bought the 50mm f1.8 yesterday.

u should use a UV filter to protect ur front lens element...

portrait lenses recommendation
1. 50mm f/1.8 - value for money
2. 50mm f/1.4
3. 85mm f/1.8

All below 1k and need a UV filter to protect the front lens element. =)

UV filters can buy Hoya or Tokina ones, low price.

High end UV filters would be B+W.
