OK. For a zoom lens there are usually 2 Aperture readngs available on the lens right? Like the following

28-105MM f2.8-4

According to what I know, this means the max aperture I can get at 28MM is f2.8 and at 105MM is f4. However, what I do not know is whether I have to switch the aperture physically to f4 when I am using 105MM or will it automatically 'convert' the f2.8 to f4??

Thank you for bearing with such a stupid question. :D

automatic

let's say it is in Av mode and u set to f2.8 at 28mm

when u starts to zoom, u will see the f number slowly increase until f4 @ 105mm

Even though I am using a manual camera? That means I have to remember that at 105MM 2.8 means 4 and so on?

if u r using the above stated lens on a maunal camera then when u want to shoot wide open at 105mm then u should turn the aperture ring on the lens to f4

No need to, when you zoom the thing to 105, the 2.8 mark becomes f/4 automatically.
