Control of temperature and relative humidity is critical in the preservation of libraries and archival collections. Books, maps, photographs and other archival documents are hygroscopic,
readily absorbing and releasing moisture. Uncontrolled humidity will accelerate deterioration and lead to visible damage like cockling paper, flaking ink, warped covers on books, and cracked
emulsion on photographs. Libraries and other archival institutions should install dry cabinets to maintain preservation standards as the cost incurred to maintain this
system will be far less than the cost to repair those damages.
