i have the Kit lens.. and i just got my hoya R72.. even though i know that ppl say the results are bad with the kit lens.. i kinda tried out a bit .. but there was lots and lots of noise in the pictures.. ( i have followed the steps the action file of photoshop etc.. the custom white balance..) but the noise seems excessive.. plus i guess i need to find out what exactly a hotspot is ..

help me around anyone?

lower the iso...make sure you shoot in raw....make sure its not too under exposure...get that all right...the image will be "quieter" ....hope this help;)

Post a couple of your pics for the guys to view. Easier to analyse.

Yes, you can post a pix from your camera, so we can see what's wrong. I think your 350D shouldn't be noisy because its digic II.

So I suspect you used highest ISO.

Are you sure you did the CWB correctly?
These look like photos taken without proper CWB.
Also, the action file will only work with IR photos taken with proper CWB and it is customised for D70+R72. You might have to do some tweaking to get your desired results.

Hi, dunno why I can't use your RAw file. but looking at the pix, your custom white balance is wrong. your pix is underexposed. And there's light leak from your filter.

umayr,

Looks like your WB is still incorrectly set. Sorry, but would like to confirm did you set your CWB with or without the filter on the lens? The picture is really very noisy as you said earlier.

I attempted some post processing and this is what I got, don't know if it's what you have also. Take a look and let me know and we can discuss further on this.

Color saturation Mid. High ----]

definitely could be id try and use other values on this

and ark19 .. i think i am doing something really wrong thats why posting here for help :)

i guess you folks will point out the real issue in another few posts :)

and about the light leak.. it could be due to a finger print on the filter? or it being not on the lens properly?

Hi,

First, the way you do CWB is wrong. you need to put on the filter to do CWB.
Second, f32 will give you bad hot spot, try to shoot at f5.6 or wider.
The only think you got right is using centre-weighted metering.
Use ISO 100, since Canon cameras have the priviledge. Less noise.
Use tripod. Do longer exposure like 30 secs or bulb mode.

Light leak could be due to the filter not screwed properly or filter cracked. Try not to stack your IR filter to your UV filter. Take your UV filter out.

Hope this help. Canon cameras produce very nice coloured IR, so yours should be able to do it.

You started on the wrong foot with the setting of the CWB. That's the most important point.

Max have answered all your queries and doubts. Now all that's left to be done is to go out and shoot.

Don't forget to post, share your experiences and results.

show us the pix after your shoots, we will help correct whatever thats possible.

a couple of questions before i go out shooting again..

the CWB setting now when i have to take a picture of the sky, what exposure settings will i keep..
since i can keep ISO 100 pointing the camera at the sky and take a picture with 30 secs exposure.. ? less or more that would depened on me..

my question is what should the CWB picture look like?

Hi umayr,

Welcome to IR !

May I suggest that instead of setting your White Ballance to the sky, try setting it on a patch of well lit grass.

Just a thought.

Have fun :)

Actually, for CWB, you can use high iso, no need to focus, just make sure the frame is fully covered with blue sky or green grass. As long as you can get an exposure that get you a fairly bright red frame. you should be done.
